OUR VISION

We live in a media-saturated, media-dominated age. One imaginative ad can install a company in the minds of millions. One stupid Tweet can send a career crashing into oblivion. One well-conceived campaign can propel a candidate to power—just as aimless clutter on social media can confuse voters and lead to defeat at the polls.

You can’t escape the power of media on people’s lives and organization’s fortunes. The head of one of the world’s largest public relations firms recently said that “every organization has to become a media organization.” Being exposed is a fact of life, and being savvy is to be equipped for success. Every profession rewards leaders who can inspire others; any organization, agency or charity that has no communications strategy risks having no future.

The Siegel Fellowship was conceived and founded by Alan Siegel to equip talented, ambitious students for life on all media, across all channels to all audiences. As a legendary creator of famous brands and branding agencies, Alan is celebrated for his proven methods for transforming ordinary communications into motivating ideas and inspiring programs.

With John Jay College leaders, Alan created the Siegel Fellowship—with scholarships and professional-level courses and internships—to help our students master strategic and tactical skills that harness communications in any career they choose. In Alan’s vision, the Siegel Fellows gain professional insights from faculty and corporate partners, sharpen their writing and speaking skills, and practice the power of clear language driven by creative ideas. The Fellows gain a breadth of classroom and real-life experiences that their future employers and colleagues will respect and reward.

Clear Communication
This course focuses on clarity and simplicity in written communication. Students learn the writing workshop format, where they will read and critique each other’s original work. The course will begin with a discussion of the structural building blocks of plain English, supplemented with a close reading of published examples of this form of writing in public communications contexts. From here, students will begin to write and revise texts for various purposes and audiences. Their writing will be workshopped in class. After receiving constructive, hands-on criticism, students will revise their work into fuller, more complete and polished pieces. At the end of the course students will create a portfolio of their revised work.
